Sintering Boats: Why Geometry Decides Furnace Yield

Molybdenum sintering boats after a high-temperature cycle.
Insight
Thermal Mass, Wall Thickness, and the Quiet Cost of a Warped Tray
A sintering boat is a fixture, a heat sink, and a consumable at the same time. Designing it as only one of those is where yield goes.
Furnace operators tend to treat trays as commodity hardware until a batch comes out with density variation nobody can explain. More often than not, the tray is the variable that changed.
Thermal Mass Is a Design Input
Every gram of molybdenum in the tray is a gram the furnace has to heat and cool with the product. Trays sized for handling convenience rather than for the thermal profile quietly stretch every cycle and blur the ramp the process was validated against.
How We Build Them
1. Forming and Welding
Sheet is formed and welded with corner geometry chosen to resist the specific direction each tray tends to warp, which we determine from the customer’s cycle rather than from a standard catalogue shape.
2. Stress Relief
Trays are stress-relieved before first use so that the first production cycle is not also the cycle that sets their final shape.
What Actually Ends a Tray’s Life
Across the furnaces we support, three failure modes account for nearly every replacement:
Warping
A tray that warps by a millimetre changes how powder settles and how heat reaches it. The next batch pays for it in density variation.
Wall Thickness
Thicker walls survive more cycles but slow the ramp. The right wall thickness is the one that matches your furnace profile, not the thickest one available.
Cycle Count
Boats are consumables with a knowable life. Tracking cycles per tray turns an unplanned scrap event into a scheduled replacement.
Plan Replacement, Don’t React to It
Trays have a knowable service life. Logging cycles per tray converts an unplanned scrap event into a scheduled consumable order — which is the cheapest quality improvement available in most sintering lines.
